Dow Chemical?s Olympics Sponsorship Results in Backlash
Why do companies sponsor events and stadiums? It’s a question we’ve raised before, because it seems to do little good for the companies in the long run. Dow Chemical ( DOW) is learning the lesson the hard way right now.
Athletes, rights groups and politicians have spoken out against the company, which still carries the stain of the massive Bhopal chemical from 1984, the BBC notes. That disaster resulted in the deaths of 25,000 people, according to Dow’s critics. A Dow representative tells the BBC that the Olympics offers Dow a great marketing opportunity. But with nearly every news story about the company’s involvement now focused on protests, it’s clear the effort has been mixed at best.
