Ipod to stereo connection

Hey,

I connect my ipod shuffle to my stereo with a headphone jack connection to double
RCA connectors - one cable adaptor, y'know...

but it only plays through one speaker.

it is like this from a computer output (headphone) to the stereo as well with the same cable.

does anyone know why?

Do I need some kind of signal splitter?

Or is it some mono only thing?

i need to connect my ipod to my stereo in my car using a cable going from the back of the stereo. it plugs in in two different sockets then my ipod goes on the other end . the sockets are white and red. what is the name of this wire please? also where is the best place to get a cheap one thanks
