World’s tallest tree

The world’s tallest tree is the Mendocino. It is a coastal redwood near Ukiah, California. It is 367-foot 6 inches tall, or five stories higher than the Statue of Liberty. There are no signs or arrows pointing to the Mendocino tree. It is kept a secret to protect the tree.

Why? Because the previous tallest tree record holder the ”Tall Tree” at 367 feet 10 inches tall, was inadvertently damaged over the years by tourists. The ground around the base of the redwood became hard-packed. from 1963 to 1970 the top ten feet of the tree died. By 1990, the ten feet of it’s top fell off.

THE world's second tallest tree has been found by Tasmanian foresters less than five kilometres from a popular tourist attraction.
Standing at about the same height as two of Hobart's Wrest Point Casino towers stacked on top of each other, the 101m giant swamp gum is second only to a giant coast redwood in the Redwood National Park in California that stands at 115m.
The Tasmanian tree has been aptly named Centurion which is a Roman officer in charge of 100 soldiers and is estimated to be about 400 years old.

Centurion will also go into the record books as the tallest hardwood tree in the world, the tallest eucalyptus in the world and the tallest flowering tree in the world.

Forestry Tasmania field officers found the tree this week near the popular Tahune Airwalk tourist attraction close to timber town Geeveston, south of Hobart.

It was also discovered that at some stage during its life it has snapped off, resprouting a new healthy crown, meaning it would have been even bigger.
