An ideal city should have certain functional standardization approaches towards road and transportation infrastructure development. Chandigarh city’s road pattern is considered ideal for both fast and slow-moving traffic, sector demarcation of roads, main thoroughfares etc. The renowned architect, Le Corbusier had a vision for planned development of the city. The city master plan developed by him decades ago rightly reveals that this great architect had in mind the future developments that are likely to take place in the city.
Consider the following table regarding the functional standardization for roads adopted and implemented by the city development authorities in cities like Chandigarh. In Kerala property development will get a boost if the urban transport infrastructure was developed in like manner. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sl. No. Description Road width (feet) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Fast traffic roads, major cities 120 2 Main thoroughfares 90 3 Sector demarcation roads 60 4 Roads with slow moving vehicles 60 5 Tributary roads 40-60 6 Residential roads 20-30 7 Recreational roads 15-20 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Property development in Kerala was hampered in many instances mainly due to the lack of adequate infrastructures to support the major changes in the prominent cities. Consider the situation in Kochi, until the commissioning of the Bypass. Almost all the major roads were clogged during peak traffic time. Transportation of goods and other heavy machineries was an arduous task until the Bypass became operational. |
