Default eCheque payment through PayPal

PayPal's eCheque feature is just like having the buyer write you a physical cheque - only it's sent to you electronically. When a buyer chooses to pay you via eCheque, the money is transferred directly from their bank account to your PayPal account. Like a regular cheque, it takes time for eCheques to clear with the buyer's bank.

eCheques often occur because a buyer's backup card has expired. We've sent your buyer an email to let them know that it'll take up to nine working days for their payment to complete. It's still a good idea to contact your buyer directly and let them know that you'll be posting the item as soon as the payment completes.

STEP 1: Communicate to your buyer Contact your buyer and let them know that you've received an eCheque and that you'll be posting the item as soon as the payment completes. Your buyer may be surprised to learn they've paid by eCheque, so feel free to explain that this happens often when a card has expired.

STEP 2: Confirm payment has completed Check your PayPal account in around nine working days and confirm that the payment has completed. You can do this by looking for "Completed" under the Status column for the payment you've received.

STEP 3: Send the item Post the item to your buyer once you've confirmed that the payment has completed.
eCheque payments come as a surprise to both the buyer and the seller, with the ridiculously long delay for the process to get completed.

The "payment" is by eCheque if the buyer directs paypal to charge on their credit/debit card, or their bank account directly. The amount is immediately deduced from the buyer's account, but is delayed when being deposited into the seller's account. The delay can be between 5 days to 2 weeks.

Paypal informs only the seller of the proceedings (also slightly delayed to retain the element of surprise).

Sellers are cautioned to process the orders only after Paypal has confirmed that the amount has been deposited into the seller's paypal account, which can take days after the buyer sends the order, as the eCheques can be "bounced".

Sellers can optionally refuse to accept echeques, but the inbuilt alternative seems to not function (clarification needed)

Note that the fee for depositing an eCheque into the seller's paypal account is the same as the standard instant payment.

When I make an eCheque payment, when will the money be debited from my bank account?

PayPal sends the request to your bank as soon as you make the payment. Just like a regular cheque, it can take up to five working days for the payment to clear and the money to be deposited into the recipient’s PayPal account.

A bank may refuse an eCheque payment. For example, a payment will be refused if you don’t have enough money in your bank account. If this happens, the payment can be delayed up to seven more working days.

You’ll always find the date we expect the payment to clear on the Transaction Details page. To find out your eCheque’s expected clearing date:

1. Log in to your PayPal account.
2. Click History at the top of the page.
3. Click the Details link of the transaction. The expected clearing date is next to the status of the transaction.

Can I refund an eCheque payment that has not cleared?

Yes. If the status of a payment is uncleared when you initiate the refund, PayPal cancels the payment and does not withdraw the funds from your bank account.
