Tur or Pigeon pea is widely traded pulse and is also known for its rich nutritional value. This is widely used in many countries and is majorly used for cooking purpose. Tur is majorly produced in many parts of India and also in many regions of Asia. Now a day it is cultivated in about 25 countries. This also has the name red gram, Congo pea or Gungo pea.
India is the world largest producer in Tur and the 80% of cultivation comes from the Country India. Next to India are Myanmar, Malawi and Nepal. Indore, Bhopal and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Jalgaon, Latur, Mumbai and Akola in Maharashtra are the major trading centres of Tur in the country. Delhi, Kanpur, Hapur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Gulbarga, Chennai etc. are also known for their Tur markets. In India, the total area under Tur is estimated at 3.75 million hectares. The main centres of Tur output in India are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Tur contributes nearly 20 percent of India’s total pulses crop production of 12-15 million tons per year. The yield in India is between 600-1,200 kg per hectare. Tur is cultivated between June-September period and arrival of fresh crop begins from October. India also imports around 400,000-500,000 ton of Tur per year. The main source for import is Myanmar. Climatic conditions have a crucial bearing on shaping the market sentiments in the case of Tur. Carryover stocks, import and price of other pulse crops are other major factors shaping fortunes of domestic tur market. Global production of Tur is estimated to be around 4 million tons. Global production of Tur has increased 40 percent since 1970s with the rise in area of cultivation in many countries in Asia and Africa. This is a single plant and a woody stemmed plant, about 4 meters in height and has a very sophisticated root system that makes it grow even in cases of drought or can be said that it makes this plant drought resistant. This plant has multiple layers of colors and most of them are yellow color, and this pigeon pea is cultivated in more than 25 countries among the world as of today and there this plant is known and called by different names in different parts of the countries, for example: Red gram, Congo Pea, Gungo Pea, no eye pea, and these are very widely consumed in different parts of the world. There are many factors which influence the prices of Tur. The major factors are being the supply and the demand. If there is high production of chili but if the demand is less than the prices might remain the same or might even come down. But if the production is less with high demand then the prices increase a lot. The deficiency in production also happens due to some unseasonal rains or any other natural calamities. As per the recent news in the market about Tur, there is an increase in selling. Now that there will be arrivals in the market, it is estimated that the prices might relax a little. So it is good to sell of any open positions if any. |
