Pigeon Pea or TUR plant is a crop that is yielded annually, or can be said as an annual crop that is more known for its sweet tasting legumes, and this is consumed as a regular diet in major or most of the countries, it is originated from the family of the "Fabaceae" and is there is also other name for this as CAJANUS CAJAN, lets know about how this plant looks and works.
This is a single plant and a woody stemmed plant, about 4 meters in height and has a very sophisticated root system that makes it grow even in cases of drought or can be said that it makes this plant drought resistant. This plant has multiple layers of colors and most of them are yellow color, and this pigeon pea is cultivated in more than 25 countries among the world as of today and there this plant is known and called by different names in different parts of the countries, for example: Red gram, Congo Pea, Gungo Pea, no eye pea, and these are very widely consumed in different parts of the world. Lets know some points on where this very special plant originated from, according to a recent survey conducted was found that it was originated from Asian Continent particularly it is said to be a native of India nearly 3000 years ago, it started from India and was moved to Eastern African Region nearly thousand years ago, then it was called Gandoles, and later it was cultivated in Egypt and this was later known according to the remnants found in the tombs of Egypt. And was moved to America during the times of Columbs, it can be said that Pigeon Peas travelled to America with the slaves of America, and this is the time that this crop gained popularity and was widely spread among all the countries and cultivation of this plant to a new level started, starting from then this Tur plant has gradually maintained its reputation and now as of today it is being widely demanded. Let’s have a look at the cultivation pattern of this plant: Pigeon Pea is widely used as a second or a mixed crop through out the world, and this is mainly cultivated with cereal grains such as maize, millet and sorghum and many more, this is a long lasting crop and this can be grown for nearly 3 to 5 years, but mostly and generally this is grown as a annual crop, In India the main season for this plant is summer, or the khariff season. June and July are considered to be the best suitable months for cultivation for this special plant. Once seeds of this plant are sowed, it generally takes around two weeks time for germinating. Flowering of the plant normally starts in the month of October and is harvested in December and January. Even in Africa the cultivation time is same as that of in India as June and July.
