It's used only for online shopping or anything related to buying from internet.
It's a good idea because giving your credit card informations to every single thing you buy may be risky, because I heard that a credit card can be used by anyone who has the "card number" and "card type" and "verification code".Even if you report a stolen card it would take sometime to get done.
